Resumo: "Phytosociology classifies plant communities according to observed growth associations between species, and uses these associations to infer the ‘rules’ that determine how communities are formed. However, the composition of the plant communities we see around us is not fixed. Communities have changed drastically in the last 10000 years, and will continue to do so in the future. This constant state of change challenges what we understand about the rules of community formation. In this seminar I will introduce you to phytosociology from the point of view of a biogeographer - a scientist who looks at the world and studies why species are found where they are. We will discuss where phytosociological principles stand up or fall down when studied across large areas and across long periods of time. One of the important outcomes of this process will be to better understand how plant communities will be affected by two of the most important pressures facing the natural world today - climate change and invasive species."
